Bonnie and Fanny's Christmas Spectacular - Review - Live Theatre

Bonnie and Fanny's Christmas Spectacular
2nd Dec 2021

Bonnie and Fanny's Christmas Spectacular is created and performed by Your Aunt Fanny and Bonnie and the Bonnettes and it is a cracker of a show! Tinsel and glitter wrapped - with a surprise or two tucked inside just waiting for the snap!

No matter what kind of office you have worked in, you will recognise the characters and the situation... The office Christmas Party, nobody really wants to be there socialising with work colleagues but no-one would dare not be there and risk missing the opportunity to advance their chances of promotion, or a bonus, or to shag the boss... And you need to be there to be sure no-one else is talking about you behind your back!  Office politics requires that everyone attend, and everyone pretends to be enjoying themselves - except Lorraine. Lorraine is serious, hardworking, conscientious and a little bit self-righteous. She's the office doormat., taken advantage of, and climbed over by everyone else in the office. She's the only one not joining in with the forced merriment - at least at the start. But keep an eye on her - the worm may turn!

With plenty of party bangers played by DJ Stacey and some M&S plonk, the staff dance and drink their way through the afternoon - it's the office party after all - computers are off, and papers and pens are pushed aside to make room for the buffet. The workers let their hair down and celebrate the holidays. Naturally, as the booze flows inhibitions are cast off and the true nature of the office relationships start to show. From the self absorbed Middle Manager Kim to Penny, the Tik Tok focussed office junior (only there because her uncle is the boss), to Lynne, the oldest, longest serving, most cynical member of staff (I've been here since the war!) and everyone in between, these women are out for themselves and as the drink flows they show it. Rivalries - for jobs and the attention of the boss - come to the fore and, after an unfortunate email sent by mistake, by the end of the afternoon the gloves are off and it's every woman for herself. But can they come together to save the situation, or will they all end up at the job centre?

This is a riotous show - with great music and an increasingly hilarious plot. The interaction with the audience is great, especially in Cameron Sharp's solo at the beginning of Act 2, which is an absolute triumph.

An excellent alternative Christmas show, it's furiously funny! It plays until 23rd December,  and should be seen by anyone who works in an office in the city!
