From Shields beach to Shrapnel Gully: the incredible story of South Shields’ greatest hero
At the age of 17 South Shields lad John Simpson Kirkpatrick joined the Merchant Navy and five years later he was serving in the Anzacs as a stretcher bearer in World War One.
His marathon rescue effort on the shores of Gallipoli still causes controversy, but it has not prevented him becoming Australia’s greatest war hero.
