Bit of a midweek treat seeing the fantastic Trunk headlining at Bobik’s in Jesmond; a great little venue upstairs at The Punch Bowl Hotel. The lads have some strong support on the evening.

First up are three-piece local band Pet Rock. They play through their set effortlessly with lovely melodic indie rock guitar riffs and some impressive drumming. This band have only been gigging since August this year. I expect great things from them in 2023.

The room starts to fill up as the second support Ceramic take the stage. I am completely blown away by the first song. Glancing around the room I see everyone else is feeling the energy. On lead vocals is the enigmatic Alfred. Elliot on drums and Eve on bass make a killer rhythm section. Tom on guitar brings the riffs. Brilliant set: I’m loving their debut single ‘Follow’. Their second single ‘Suede’ is due out on Boxing Day. Really excited to see how 2023 pans out for this exciting new band.

Now for the main event. I saw Trunk at The Lubber Fiend in July this year supporting local legends Jango Flash. The room is at full capacity when they come on stage. The crowd is treated to a beautiful soundscape, merging heavy melodic rock with classic shoegaze. Lead singer Connor commands the room with his stunning vocals. Lead guitarist Sam appears lost in the music at times. Bass player Joe has an infectious grin and engages the crowd frequently. Drummer Dylan is mesmerising to watch; probably one of the best drummers in the north east. The nine-track set is over far too quickly. I am impressed with how these guys have evolved in such a short space of time. Their camaraderie is evident both on and off stage. The stand-out tracks are ‘Safe’ which is potentially their debut single. Also, ‘Tinnitus’, written by Dylan. The band already have their first album boxed off in my opinion. Really looking forward to hearing their recordings in the new year.

A thoroughly enjoyable evening with 3 exciting new bands. The north east music scene is nailing it right now.
