Bodega -Review- The Cluny

Bodega

The Cluny

20 March 2022

 New York meets Newcastle.

Aah The Cluny, probably my favourite live venue. Small and intimate with great acoustics. Friendly bar staff and decent beer.
Got there early to catch the support band Yes Chef, a group of lads formed during lockdown. I hadn't heard this band before and I wasn't disappointed.
The drummer sings on the first song, they have my attention straightaway. Listening to their set I can only describe them as slacker pop/rock with a hint of 60s psychedelia and shoegaze in the mix. Standout song for me is Tiramasoo from their first ep Tinker Miss You. Gorgeous layering and cool vocals.
After a short interval it's time for Bodega. I came across this post punk collective on a Spotify playlist.
Singer/percussionist Nikki points her drumstick at the crowd during Bodega Birth
"Enter Bodega.
This is documentary"
All the hits are played tonight from the infectious groove of Name Escape to the deliciously funky Doers. I love their sardonic lyrics:-
"No one is as salty as the seven seas except me and Jack in Titanic"
I cannot take my eyes of drummer Tai Lee.
She plays the whole set on her feet, jumping around like a Keith Moon/Animal hybrid. The lights on her red hair only add to this vision. I am a drummer of sorts and have no idea how she manages this night after night.
This is one of the best live shows I've seen.
Till the next time.
Bodega's new album Broken Equipment out now on all platforms.
