Intergalactic (Petals and Constellations) -review - Live theatre

Intergalactic (Petals and Constellations)

Wednesday 16th March 2022

A play for the universe. This delightful two hander features the turbulent relationship of two teenagers Johnny, known as space boy in jest, due to his obsession with everything space and Hassan, a new boy at school who’s almost opposite view of space, is that it’s boring.

Intergalactic by the Beastie boys is played before the play starts of course as well as other space themed songs. The soundtrack and sound effects are used sparsely throughout, but effectively, being backed up with three computer screens, which light up the backgrounds relevant to what is going on within the play.

There’s a lovely memorising scene by the sea, which is gloriously brought to life using the three screens and the sounds of the tide, flowing in and out, making a very relaxing scene between the two actors.

Johnny is gloriously camp as he details how it feels to be gay and is paired with Hassan , who is struggling to fit in to his new school, to create a physics science project presentation. Will we see the relationship develop over the course of the play? or falter?

Alison Scurfield’s debut play is full of wit, with great moments of comedic dialogue from both characters and audience laughter throughout. The writing is superb. The acting by Aiden Nord and Tyler Dobbs is top notch and there is good chemistry between the two characters. All directed by Graeme Thompson, who hits all the beats. The props are minimal including a Professor Brian Cox t-shirt and there’s some lovely moments throughout the play as we discover the characters' journeys living through their grief.

The play ended with rapturous applause. Very enjoyable viewing.

Running 17th - Saturday 19th March 2022. Show at 7.30pm
