Nigel Clarke -Review- The Arches, Tynemouth

 Two singer/songwriters and a dog.

The Arches, Tynemouth

1.10.2021

To say I was excited for this gig is a bit of an understatement. It's not often you get to see a Nineties legend in such an intimate setting.

The Arches is situated in the stunning Land of Green Ginger in the heart of Tynemouth. A haven for good food, drinks and live music. This venue is committed to giving local artists much needed exposure post pandemic.

On arrival I am greeted by a Boston Terrier called Murphy and Nigel's soundcheck. Perfect. Lovely relaxing atmosphere and decent local beer on tap.

First up is local lad Karl Douthwaite. Karl plays a really nice set.
Standout songs are 'Too Many People' and 'Dear Simon'. Really nice guitar work considering he broke his finger earlier this year. There is music playing elsewhere but this doesn't put him off. In fact he encourages the audience to cheer loudly. Karl is joined on stage by his friend Beatmaster Kev for a rip roaring finale which brings the house down. I look forward to hearing more from this new artist.

After a break with some cool background tunes Nigel takes the stage.

In true troubadour fashion he takes us on a seamless journey through Nineties Dodgy classics to solo tracks from his album 'Make Believe Love'.

Straightaway the audience are encouraged to participate with 'Mended Heart'. Artist and audience bond is created right there!
After the beautiful solo track 'Don't Be Denied' we are treated to a stripped down version of Northern Soul classic 'The Night'.

The venue really comes alive with the sublime 'In A Room'.
Everybody is singing along and looking around, the venue has filled up nicely. Nigel engages with the audience throughout his set. In such an intimate setting it's a completely different experience.

Nearing the end of the show most of the room are on their feet to the strains of 'Family Affair'(Sly And The Family Stone)
This soon morphs into 'Good Enough'. An amazing mash up of two brilliant songs.

I had a lovely chat with Nigel after his first set. His musical influences are mostly punk with a bit of funk. I was surprised to find out that we share a love of 'LCD Sound System'.

What a beautiful experience. I can't recommend this venue enough. £10 to get up close to a 90s legend and all local showcases free.

Nigel Clark is touring next year playing two consecutive nights at Old Cinema Laundrette in Durham.
